Movie Review-Paul 2011

Movie Review-Paul 2011How many movies feature a sarcastic, flip-flop wearing, bird-eating grey alien voiced by an obscenity-spewing Seth Rogen? Probably only one. Sadly, the originality ends there and even with such a bizarre protagonist, Paul offers little else as refreshing as the vulgar creature. Even then, one could argue that it's simply Seth Rogen playing himself, only masked by a computer-animated extraterrestrial visage. There are several questionably laugh-out-loud moments and a slew of notable character actors including Jason Bateman, Jane Lynch, and Bill Hader, yet the material they work with is an amusing-at-best array of recycled Star Wars jokes, overworked sci-fi parodies, and predictable movie references.

After visiting the pop culture melting pot of the San Diego Comic-Con, England natives Graeme Willy (Simon Pegg) and Clive Gollings (Nick Frost) decide to travel across the U.S. and hit all the major UFO hotspots. Their vacation proceeds as planned until they pick up Paul (Seth Rogen), a hitch-hiker who just happens to be an otherworldly visitor, complete with shocking healing powers, invisibility, and oversized head. Agreeing to help Paul outrun the government agent (Jason Bateman) hot on his trail, Graeme and Clive embark on an out-of-this-world journey across the desert where kidnapped RV park employees, shotgun-toting Christians, inept men in black, and vengeful rednecks are the least of their troubles.

Movie Review-Disney Nature African Cats 2011

Movie Review-Disney Nature African Cats 2011Aren't lions and cheetahs supposed to be majestic, noble creatures, far disposed from the greed and war-obsessed human animals? They may still be visually stunning felines, but in Disney's African Cats we're offered a rather vicious vision of hostile takeovers, rivalrous siblings, and brutal skirmishes like some Kurosawa-style tale of ancient feudal warlords battling for power and land (or even a modern power-hungry gangster flick). The film steps back from its documentary roots to effectively dramatize the adventures of two mothers raising their cubs by presenting clear cut heroes and villains, thundering musical cues, and Samuel L. Jackson's overly enthusiastic narration. Manipulative though it may be, it's still impressive to see the emotions evoked through the personified cats and their unbreakable familial bonds.

Most Anticipated Movies of 2011

Most Anticipated Movies of 20112011 is a year worth looking forward to as many action-packed movies that have been anticipated would be screened at this year. As a result, I have put together a list of the top 3 anticipated movies of 2011.

With high expectations of previous series viewers, Transformers 3 is definitely one of the anticipated movies of 2011. However, many speculate over the possibility of a rather less heated movie as a result of the very much shocking replacement of the show's top attraction - Megan Fox. Before landing the leading role along Shia Labeouf in Transformers, no one knew who Megan fox was. Director Michael Bay was the one who gave her the chance of a lifetime. Thus, when there was dispute between them, many blamed Megan Fox for forgetting who had helped her gain her current status. Since then, Michael Bay has given the role to Victoria Secret model, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. Rosie, who is 23 years old, has no acting experience except for her job on the fashion show runway. As for the movie plot, the decepticons are back to avenge their previous defeat. Thus, once again, the autobots led by Optimus Prime are back to defend Earth. It would be released on July 1st, 2011.

Sundance Film Festival 2011

Sundance Film Festival 2011
Last night was amazing. I waitlisted for the Movie "Margin Call" in Park City at the Sundance Film Festival. I was number seven of the last seven people to get in to the 1200 seat theater. I am in the money management business so I actually lived the collapse of the fixed income and financial markets of 2008. This movie will definitely go mainstream not because it was the best movie that I have ever seen but because of the cast. Kevin Spacey, Jeremy Irons, Demi Moore, Stanley Tucci, Paul Bettany, Will Emerson, Sam Rogers, Penn Badgley, Zachary Quinto, and so many more I could go on and on. The movie actually made me a little queasy because at one time in my career I worked at Bear Stearns a large investment bank and it churned up memories of times when making money was not so fun and losing money was even more painful. Based loosely on the collapse of Lehman Brothers "Margin Call" tells the story of the 2008 financial collapse that took the firm under. As always Kevin Spacey is incredible. Jeremy Irons is a treat as always and the all star ensemble makes this one well worth your time and money.

My favorite movie so far as of Wednesday, January 26th is "The Details" with Toby Maguire, so very clever in its plot and well thought out. Funny from the beginning to the end. It is a black comedy of sorts where a guy gets in to a lot of hot water all in about a 24hour period. Laura Linney steps outside of her normal roles and is hysterically funny as the crazy next door neighbor. Go see this one as soon as it is in theaters. Staring Elizabeth Banks, Ray Liotta, Kerry Washington, Laura Linney and Toby Macguire. We have also seen "Pariah" a very moving film of a young lesbian girl trying to come out in a conservative household and not knowing how to do it. This young ladies autobiography was very touching. "Buck" is one of the most extraordinary documentary films that I have ever seen. It is the life's story of Buck Branaman and his family (The Horse Whisperer).

Best Documentary Feature - Spanish Film Goya Award 2011

Best Documentary Feature - Spanish Film Goya Award 2011Not often the subject of full-length films, architecture comes alive in Deyan Sudjic's How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster? Debuted in Spain in early October, 2010, it was awarded the TCM Audience Award to the Best European Film at the San Sebastian International Film Festival 2010, and has been nominated for the Spanish Film Academy's Goya Award 2011 for Best Documentary Feature, the most prestigious cinema award in Spain.

Best Documentary Feature - Spanish Film Goya Award 2011All of the positive global press yet there is mysteriously little film news surrounding its official UK release on January 28th.

As one might gather from the title, How Much Does Your Building Weigh, Mr. Foster? is a grand documentary on the life and work of Sir Norman Foster, designer of London's very own Gherkin at 30 St Mary Axe, from his humble childhood through his rise to genius. The film is full of strikingly beautiful large-framed shots that reflect the incredible architecture of Foster in his never ending quest to improve the global quality of life.

With production lasting over two years, the film dives into the mind of an architect to reveal buildings and projects in a way that many have never dreamed imaginable. Some of the most fascinating scenes arise when Foster speaks of his innovative ideas to help ease the inevitable influx of people living in metropolitan cities after leaving the countryside. This is to include plans for a completely carbon neutral city, already under construction in Abu Dhabi, named Masdar, which is to run fully automated driverless cars and is to be completed in 2030. Alongside commentary from Foster and Sudjic, the film also includes interviews with engineers, architects, and notable artists such as US's Bono.

My Most Anticipated Movies of 2011

My Most Anticipated Movies of 2011As we kick off a new year in cinema, I thought I'd take time to look ahead at the films we'll be hit with over the course of the year. In this article, I'll be going over what my 15 most anticipated movies are for the year. Now it should be noted, these aren't the movies that I feel will be the best of 2011 necessarily. Rather, they're the ones that, as of the time of this writing, I am anticipating the most. So without further ado, here are my most anticipated movies of 2011.

1. Sucker Punch

Director: Zack Snyder

Writer: Zack Snyder and Steve Shibuya

Stars: Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens and Abbie Cornish

Release Date: March 25, 2011

Genre: Action Fantasy Thriller

What is it: A young girl is institutionalized by her wicked stepfather. Retreating to an alternative reality as a coping strategy, she envisions a plan which will help her escape from the facility.

Why it should be good: Really hot and badass chicks wearing schoolgirl outfits and other skimpy clothes, with swords and guns, coupled with Snyder's awesome visual flair? Yea, definitely count me in. The trailer for this thing just looks completely awesome. From the style to the action, even the story (while seeming a bit out there) seems cool. I'm beginning to thoroughly enjoy Snyder's work. If The Adjustment Bureau could be this year's new Inception due to its mindfuck story, then Sucker Punch could absolutely be this year's Inception meets The Dark Knight meets 300 meets Inglorious Basterds due to it's style and epic adventure, yet dark tone with alternate realities. This movie just oozes style and badass-ness and I really can't wait for what is sure to be an absolutely entertaining, epic adventure.

Must See Movies of 2011

Must See Movies of 2011One of the first things that people look into at the beginning of the year is what movies are going to come out within the next twelve months. This builds up excitement for the next blockbuster. So, this 2011, what are the movies that we should look forward to?

Transformers: Dark of the Moon

This is the third installment of the Michael Bay directed franchise based on the 1980s toy line, comic book series and animated television series. Starring Shia LaBeouf, this movie picks up on a new power found on the moon. It rewrites our modern history to deepen the relationship of humans with transformers.

For geeks and casual fans alike, this should be a thrilling movie. However, considering that the last movie, although a box office hit, for a lack of better term, sucked, it's a bitter-sweet feeling to learn about the next one. Bitter since it could again disappoint fans of the franchise especially considering the fact that Meagan Fox, the breakout female lead actress since the original movie, won't be returning for this film.
